Ah, winter, just say the word and people envision things like snow, hot chocolate, cozy fireplaces and the holiday season. Some love it, some hate it, but here are 10 reasons you should love Winter:
“I love the scents of winter! For me, it’s all about the feeling you get when you smell pumpkin spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, gingerbread and spruce.” – Taylor Swift
1. You Can See The Sunrise Later
During the other seasons of the year, it seems like only people who work at night or stay out all night could catch a glimpse of sunrise. But with the entrance of winter, the sun doesn’t come up until around 7 am or so, giving most people a better chance of enjoying that glorious explosion of colors of red, pink and yellow. Don’t waste this opportunity to enjoy this beautiful sight with someone you love.
2. You Can Eat Carbs Again
With the onset of winter, it’s ok to eat carbs again. During the summer we had to eat sparingly so we could fit into those bathing suits, but now we need that extra fuel to help keep us warm during those cold winter nights! Hoorah for sweatshirts and sweaters season! We can bundle up to our heart’s content and dig into our favorite carb-filled meal.
3. Halloween And Bonfires
Bonfires are romantic on a crisp, cool winter night. Sitting together and holding gloved hands to keep warm, being mesmerized by the dancing flames, and cuddling together while you drink some hot chocolate. And what’s not to like about Halloween? You have free reign to buy all the candy you want and then stash away your favorite while you insist you are buying them all for the kids who come knocking at the door on Oct. 31st for Trick or Treat.
4. Browsing The Calendar Stores
It’s that time of year when all the new calendars start to appear. No matter what you love, what your hobby or job is, or what makes you laugh or even those cute kitten and puppy versions that make you say awwwww, it’s fun to browse all those multiple calendar versions appearing on the store shelves. Do you love race cars? They got that. Do you love a certain TV show? Likely they got that too. No matter if you love cooking or planes or babies or whatever, yep, likely they got that in a calendar.
5. Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow
Unless you live somewhere where the climate stays warm in the winter, likely you are anticipating the excitement of the first snow of the winter season. Kids are at the ready with their sleds or skis, as they hope for a snow day that also gets them out of school. The fun of building a snowman or making snow angels in the newly fallen whiteness of snow. Just watch out for that yellow snow, lol! Yes, it can be dangerous if you have to drive in it, but if you have the option of staying home wrapped up in a blanket and sipping on a nice hot cup of tea or coffee as you watch those flakes come down, then it’s one of the most awesome experiences in the world.
6. It’s The Holiday Season
It seems there is a holiday for almost everyone during the wintertime. From Thanksgiving on to Hanukkah, Kwanza and Christmas. There’s the fun of seeing all the decorations, singing carols, eating lots of fun foods, and buying and receiving gifts. It’s a time of year when people try to be nicer to one another, and hopefully keep on doing so after the new year rolls in. A time for family visits, great smells in the kitchen and all those sappy holiday movies.
7. Winter Scents And Smells
There are so many smells and scents unique to wintertime to love! You have the smoky smell of a fireplace or bonfire, the scent of cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger for cookies, cakes and pies; as well as the pine scents from holiday décor, the smell of melting caramel for candy apples and the peppermint of holiday candies. It all makes me sigh with joy and my mouth water in anticipation.
8. Colorful And Crunchy Leaves
The leaves on the trees in wintertime have all turned into mountains of red, yellow, orange and brown as they fall from the sky. We rake them all up into huge piles and then, it comes! CRUNCH! CHRUNCH! CHRUNCH! As we laugh, jump into piles and smash our boots against the crispness of the fallen treasure of leaves. Kids just love to do this, as well as some adults too. It brings back memories of childhood’s simple pleasures unless of course, you were the one who had to rake up all that bounty!
9. Football Season
It’s the season a lot of people both men and women alike wait for all year long. The chance to root for their favorite high school, college or professional football teams. The rah rah rah of the cheerleaders and the om pah pah pah of the marching band at halftime. It’s fun to have a football party during events like the Superbowl, or just any time you want an excuse to have chips, wings, beer, and friendship filling a room with a big-screen TV on the wall for all to enjoy.
10. Winter – No More Mosquitoes
And the best thing of all about winter is no more worry about nasty, biting mosquitoes or a lot of other kinds of insects. Sure, they will be back next year but for now, we can give a sigh of relief and pack away the bug repellants. Most of these pests die out during the cold weather and you aren’t likely to see them until spring or summer hits, but that’s several weeks of bliss to enjoy until that fateful day.
There is a lot of love about winter, and these are only a handful of things many people adore about this cold time of the year!
