There’s Nothing Sweeter Than The Fruits Of Your Labor: Think Before You Act

Work Hard, Play Harder

I know you’ve probably heard this saying throughout your life. But it is more practical than you think. Everything you are enjoying today is possibly a result of your hard work in the past.

The good job you have today is because you worked hard in school and got into the industry. On rare occasions, it might be because you are well connected or your parents are. But that’s a blue moon situation.

The most regular occurrence is working hard and enjoying every fruit you reap. You need to arm yourself with the right equipment and know the right season to work hard so that you can enjoy when it’s time. That’s basically making hay while the sun shines.

However, there are a number of factors that hinder our success. Without the right tools and knowledge of the season, your crops may wither before you even have the chance to enjoy the fruits.

With that in mind, you need to know how to work smart and not how to work hard. In this article, therefore, I will give you a highlight on how to work smart so that you have the chance to reap your fruits.

Remember You Are Made Of Flesh And Bone

We have one of the most functional anatomies compared to other animals. What’s more, our intelligence level is way beyond the chats. That makes us the most effective and most dominant animal on the planet.

Unfortunately, our bodies will always need a point of rest. Otherwise, you risk burning all your energy. Taking short breaks will always help you rejuvenate your fuel to continue working. Always remember to take short breaks otherwise you risk your body giving up on you.

This will also help you enjoy what you are doing and at the same time give you some peace of mind. Too much work without play is always a bad thing.

Motivation Should Not Be Your Only Driving Force

Whenever you feel motivated, I bet you can work all day and night. It’s like filling up your gas tank just before a race. Motivation will give you that extra energy that you need. However, once in a while, your gas will run empty.

And if that’s the only source of your energy, you might get stuck in the middle of nowhere without any gas stations around. It’s risky depending on motivation alone to get you through your day to day activities.

Train yourself to be disciplined. This is one of the key values we all learned when we were kids. If you discipline yourself and make sure you always show up to work when needed, then you won’t need any motivation to work.

Once you learn that discipline is everything, motivation will act as a natural booster to your daily routine. Meaning without motivation you will work normally but with a bit of motivation, you will be supercharged.

Perfection Is Not Everything

I believe that we are not perfect. I personally have a couple of flaws of my own. But that doesn’t make me less of a human. It only means I have acknowledged my imperfection and I’m always working against it.

Stop trying to make yourself perfect. You will seldom reach there. If you try so hard to be a perfectionist, you are bound to have challenges. For instance, poor work relationship, stress, anxiety, depression, low productivity among others.

“I told my son: you don’t need to be in the top three in your class, being in the middle is fine, so long as your grades aren’t too bad. Only this kind of person [a middle-of-the-road student] has enough free time to learn other skills.” – Jack Ma

You should be satisfied with a job well done. No one likes a perfectionist. But we all love someone who appreciates a job well done. Don’t get me wrong! I don’t mean that you shouldn’t do your best when working. There are a few tiny details that will actually need you to do them perfectly.

That is why you should learn how to differentiate what really needs perfection from the rest.

Forget About Your Time-Waster Friends

I love hanging out with friends whenever it’s necessary. Most of the friends I have are complete workaholics. We can’t have more than an hour conversation without the mention of what we should project we should do together. It can sometimes get boring but I love the fact that they always look forward to the future.

It didn’t all start this way. I had friends who always had time to waste and talk about nothing constructive. They were always asking for time to hang out since they didn’t have something to concentrate on. I tried molding them into better people by suggesting a few projects we can work on together but they didn’t follow my lead. Instead, most of them turned into drug addicts.

As much as it pained me, I had to drop a few of them who couldn’t turn over a new leaf. The ones that did are still my friends to date and we are making moves together. The whole point about me sharing my experience is to show that you might have to cut loose a few friends for you to make your way to success. It’s never pretty but it’s something you might have to do.

Embrace Technology

Our century is all about technology. It’s kind of like the new gold mine in town. You will need to educate yourself about the latest technological advancements in your sector. This will ensure you are always ahead of the game.

Technology has made most of our jobs quite easy. Today, information is at your fingertips and communication barrier is a thing of the past. There are so many ways to connect with your partners that I might fill up this entire article if I decide to list all of them.

Take time to know what is the latest advancements and it will help you a lot to make the best out of your business.

Summary

Some of the above steps might not be easy to take but they are quite necessary. I had to let my kid teach me more on how to use some of the latest techs. in smartphones (Believe me, he was actually laughing at my ignorance.) but in the end, I learned what I needed to know. It actually turned out to be the best bonding moment. Learn to ask for help when you need it.

If you implement all the above steps, then you will enjoy every fruit in your garden.

  1. Very well written post, a lot of great advice and info. I was a person who worked hard and didn’t take those needed breaks. Ended up ruining my health for life and not being able to work. Hard lesson. Keep up the good advice, helps me even in my present situation, thanks.
